Music - Beyond the Ceiling

Beyond the Ceiling cdThis project was begun several years ago, but it seemed that it wasn’t meeting the expectations that Fernando had in view. Fernando’s pursuit in the quality of the music dictated whether or not the project would continue, even at the expense of being set back more than once.

After working briefly with drummer Keith Wilson in the studio, it was clear that what Keith was doing on the drums was producing exactly what would support and build the desired result Fernando had in mind. The language was clear, nothing needed to be said, it was coming through his playing. A few years later Keith and Fernando met again to discuss the production of the project. Fernando compiled the tunes that would make the cut and Keith connected him with bassist Chuck Archard to assist with the arrangements and of course lay down the bass work. Again just as Keith, Chuck was speaking the same language on the bass and delivering with taste and originality. Once the charts were prepared the recording date was set, but there was one more musician to bring to the table. Pianist Chris Rottmayer and Fernando were introduced, and since Keith, Chuck, and Chris work together regularly, the only expectation for the keyboard work was very high which Chris quickly displayed once the recording began.

After about 25 seconds into the first tune being recorded, the only word to describe what was being done was magical. But there is nothing magical about musicians who have paid the price with diligence and time to hone their craft. Finally audio engineer Kendall Thompsen was brought in to place everything in it's proper space. Beyond the Ceiling was becoming a reality because of everyone’s efforts.

The cd opens with track #1 "The Brevity of Life." The guitar sets the pace with a melody that immediately connects to the listener and the band is in full gear right from the top. Track #3 "Relentless." This song begins with a demanding drum groove with equally demanding guitar work soon to follow. Things progress as the song alternates from a groove that pushes to a groove that is relaxed. As the song develops relentlessly, it builds to the powerhouse feel that takes it out. This is a slight description of a couple of the tunes. Real musicians perform on this Cd and knock it out of the park. A very refreshing product where the players could play well beyond what the music calls for, but have the knowledge and integrity to play and solo only what is needed for the pleasure of the listener.
